The Yumba in Mitchell, outback Queensland

One of my favourite walks takes me and Major on a track through bimble box trees and long golden grasses. Hand-painted stones mark the track, created by children with Aboriginal themes in mind.

A metal goanna reminds me of the presence of this magnificent, pre-historic looking reptile -- both in Mitchell and throughout the rest of outback Australia. We've had the privilege of seeing a sand goanna in our garden; and in the bush, we've seen them climb trees, gripping the bark with their immense claws.

Yumba is the place of the original Aboriginal settlement in Mitchell. At the present time it's used for ceremonies, celebrations and as a place of learning.
